JICA Kenya, in collaboration with KIOCA Kenya and the Ministry of East African Community (EAC), the ASALs and Regional cooperation hosted a side event during the Africa Climate Summit, 2023, dubbed ‘Remodeling resilience approaches to food and nutrition security, livestock production systems and water provision interventions to enhance communities’ resilience to climate change in Africa’s drylands’.
In the side event, Ms. Ayako Mitsui, presented on the IFNuS project which implemented in Kenya and funded by JICA, highlighting the innovative actions towards the improvement of food and nutrition security in the arid lands. The project is promoting the utilization of locally adapted indigenous foods as part of household and institutional meals. UNICEF Kenya also presented on the KOICA funded water project in the arid lands of Kenya.
During the panel discussion, Ms. Angela Kimani, Initiative for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa (IFNA) regional consultant highlighted on the role of working with communities and promoting indigenous food systems in order to address the underlying challenges affecting food and nutrition security.
IFNA, which was launched in Africa in 2016, during the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV), held in Nairobi Kenya, has since its launch, been implementing pilot projects in several countries and undertaking capacity building trainings in collaboration with national governments and Regional Economic Commissions (RECs).
